Paying for care · Fort Myers, Florida

How Much Does a Nursing Home Cost in Fort Myers?

Expect somewhere between $9,000 and $12,000 a month for private-pay skilled nursing in the Fort Myers area, depending on room type and level of care. That is the honest range. Anyone quoting you a single precise figure for “the average Florida nursing home” is guessing, and this page explains why the published numbers vary so widely.

Three payers, three completely different numbers

Almost every confusing conversation about nursing home cost comes from mixing these up. The same bed has three different prices depending on who is paying.

Who pays for skilled nursing care, and what it costs you
PayerWhat it coversWhat you actually pay
MedicareShort-term skilled care only, up to 100 days per benefit period, after a qualifying hospital stay$0 per day for days 1–20 after the $1,736 deductible, then $217 a day
Private payAnything, for as long as you can fund itRoughly $9,000–$12,000 a month in this area
Florida MedicaidLong-term care for those who meet income, asset and level-of-care testsAlmost all of the resident’s income goes to the facility; Medicaid pays the rest

The sequence most families follow

Hospital, then Medicare-covered rehabilitation for a few weeks, then private pay when skilled coverage ends, then Medicaid once savings are gone. Knowing that sequence in advance is worth more than any single price quote, because it tells you what to prepare for.

What nursing home care costs nationally

These are the published national medians from the most recent CareScout Cost of Care survey, the successor to the Genworth survey that the industry has used for two decades. They are the most citable numbers available.

Why published Florida figures disagree so much

You will find Florida monthly figures quoted anywhere between about $8,500 and $12,200. They are not all wrong. They differ because some quote semi-private and some private rooms, some are statewide medians and some are metro figures, some are two years old, and some are averages rather than medians. When you read a cost figure anywhere, check three things: room type, date, and whether it is a median or an average. If a page does not tell you, it is not a reliable number.

The arithmetic nobody shows you

What a full Medicare-covered stay actually costs

People assume “Medicare covers it” means free. It does not. Here is the complete cost of a 100-day covered stay in 2026, using the official figures.

Source: 2026 amounts from Medicare.gov, checked 10 September 2026. A Medigap supplement policy will often cover the days 21–100 coinsurance, which is exactly the situation these policies exist for. Medicare Advantage copayments work differently and some plans charge from day one.

Most stays end long before day 100

Coverage stops the moment daily skilled care is no longer needed, which is commonly somewhere between two and five weeks. So the more realistic Medicare bill is the deductible plus a few weeks of coinsurance — and then the private rate starts.

The variables

What actually moves your bill

Two residents in the same building can pay very different amounts. These are the reasons.

Room type

A private room typically adds around $1,200 a month over semi-private. It is the single largest controllable difference.

Level of care

Facilities price by care need. Someone requiring two-person transfers, wound care or behavioural support costs more than someone largely independent.

Memory care

A secured dementia unit usually carries a premium over a standard nursing bed, sometimes several hundred dollars a month.

Ancillary charges

Incontinence supplies, certain medications, salon services, cable and phone are often billed separately. Ask for the full schedule.

Therapy intensity

Under Medicare this is bundled. Under private pay, additional therapy may be an extra line item.

Location

Coastal and metropolitan facilities in Lee County price above inland ones. The gap can be substantial for the same level of care.

When savings run out

How Medicaid changes the cost picture

Once someone qualifies for Florida Medicaid long-term care, the monthly bill effectively disappears — but so does most of their income.

The resident keeps a small personal needs allowance and, where relevant, an amount diverted to a spouse still living at home. Almost everything else, including Social Security and pensions, goes to the facility as their share of cost. Medicaid pays the difference between that and the facility’s Medicaid rate.

The 2026 financial tests are a gross monthly income cap of $2,982 and $2,000 in countable assets for a single applicant, with the at-home spouse able to keep up to $162,660. Being over the income cap does not disqualify you in Florida — a qualified income trust solves it. Our Florida Medicaid eligibility guide covers the detail.

The question that costs families the most

Ask every facility you shortlist, in writing: “Does this specific bed convert to Medicaid when private funds run out, and will you keep the resident in place?” Not every Medicare-certified bed is Medicaid-certified. Discovering that after a year of private payment means moving a frail person to a new building at the worst possible time.

Before you sign

Questions that protect you financially

  • What is the daily rate for the room type being offered, and what does it include?
  • What is billed separately? Ask for the written schedule of ancillary charges.
  • How often do rates rise, and by how much in each of the last three years?
  • Does the rate change if the level of care changes, and who decides that?
  • Does this bed convert to Medicaid, and is that in writing?
  • Is anyone being asked to sign as a personal guarantor? Never sign as financially responsible in a personal capacity.
  • What notice period applies if the resident has to leave, or is discharged?
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does a nursing home cost per month in Fort Myers?

Roughly $9,000 to $12,000 a month for private-pay skilled nursing, depending on room type and level of care. The national median is $9,581 a month for a semi-private room and $10,798 for a private room, and Florida generally runs above the national median.

Does Medicare pay the whole bill?

No. Medicare covers skilled care for up to 100 days per benefit period. In 2026 you pay a $1,736 deductible, nothing for days 1 to 20, and $217 a day for days 21 to 100. A full 100-day stay costs $19,096 out of pocket before any private rate begins.

Why do published Florida cost figures vary so much?

Because they measure different things. Some quote semi-private rooms and some private, some are statewide and some metro, some are medians and some averages, and some are two years out of date. Always check room type, date and method.

Is a private room worth the extra cost?

A private room typically adds around $1,200 a month. It matters most for residents who are cognitively intact and value privacy, or who are medically fragile. For someone with dementia, a shared room is sometimes less distressing rather than more.

What is not included in the daily rate?

Commonly incontinence supplies, some medications, salon services, cable, phone and personal items. Ask for the written schedule of ancillary charges before admission, not after.

What happens when the money runs out?

Most residents transition to Florida Medicaid. The resident’s income then goes to the facility apart from a small personal needs allowance and any spousal diversion, and Medicaid pays the balance. Confirm in advance that the bed converts.

Should I sign the admission agreement as responsible party?

Be very careful. Sign as agent or power of attorney for the resident, not in your own personal capacity. A facility cannot lawfully require a third party to guarantee payment personally as a condition of admission.
