How we source our data

Ratings, staffing hours, turnover figures, bed counts and ownership details are taken directly
from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Care Compare database, which publishes
a free public profile for every Medicare-certified nursing home in the United States. Each figure
on this site names the federal provider number it came from and the date CMS last updated it.
CMS refreshes this data quarterly, and we re-check our pages against it.

Where a figure does not come from CMS — cost estimates in particular — we say so plainly and
name the type of source. We do not publish ratings, prices or staffing numbers that we cannot
attribute.

What we will not do

We do not accept payment from facilities in exchange for favourable coverage, and we publish
federal ratings as they stand, including where they are poor. A facility’s page on this site will
show its weaknesses alongside its strengths, because a family making this decision under time
pressure is badly served by anything else.
